FAQ

Common questions

Practical information about choosing a counsellor, beginning counselling, session formats, fees, insurance, privacy and urgent support.

01Getting started

How do I choose a counsellor?

Compare each counsellor’s relevant experience, therapeutic approaches, professional registrations, languages and appointment format. Kaitlyn’s work emphasizes trauma-informed and body-based approaches. Trautman’s work emphasizes structured REBT, CBT and psychosocial support, including ongoing mental health concerns.

What happens during the free 15-minute consultation?

It is a brief, no-cost conversation about fit, availability, appointment format and the most appropriate next step. It is not a counselling session or a full assessment. Use the consultation for general questions rather than sending detailed sensitive information.

What can I expect in the first counselling session?

The first session usually explores what brings you to counselling, your current concerns, relevant background, goals, preferences and any immediate safety or practical needs. You and the counsellor can then discuss a working plan. You do not need to disclose everything at once.

Do I need to know which therapeutic approach I want?

No. You can begin with what you are experiencing and what you would like to change. The counsellor can explain relevant options and recommend an approach or combination of approaches based on safety, readiness, goals, preferences and professional scope.

What if the counsellor or approach does not feel like the right fit?

Fit can be discussed openly. The counsellor may adjust the pace or approach, clarify expectations or help you consider another option. The free consultation can reduce uncertainty, but it is also acceptable to reassess fit after sessions begin.

02Sessions and areas of support

What concerns can Kaeva Counselling support?

Areas of support include trauma and PTSD symptoms, anxiety and OCD-related patterns, depression and mood concerns, stress and burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, chronic illness and pain, cancer-related concerns and ongoing mental health concerns. Suitability depends on the counsellor’s scope and your needs.

How are counselling approaches selected?

Approaches are selected collaboratively. The counsellor considers your goals, current stability, preferences, cultural context, evidence relevant to the concern and their own training and scope. The plan can be reviewed and changed as counselling progresses.

How often will I attend, and how many sessions will I need?

There is no single schedule that suits everyone. Frequency and the likely duration of counselling are discussed with your counsellor based on your concerns, goals, availability, progress and the type of work being undertaken. The plan can be reviewed over time.

Are online and in-person sessions available?

Online counselling is available for eligible clients where the counsellor is permitted to practise, including services described for British Columbia. In-person availability in Vancouver varies by counsellor and should be confirmed when booking.

Are services available in Chinese?

Yes. Services are available in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Confirm your preferred spoken language when booking.

Are individual, couple or family sessions available?

The fees page lists individual and couple sessions. Family participation may also be considered when clinically appropriate and within the counsellor’s scope. Availability, participants, consent and appointment format should be confirmed directly.

03Fees, insurance and funding

What are the current fees, and is a sliding scale available?

The 15-minute consultation is free. The published fee for individual and couple sessions is $170. Confirm the fee and appointment length when booking. Limited sliding-scale arrangements may be available, depending on the clinician’s availability.

Can I use extended health insurance?

Possibly. Coverage varies by plan and by the counsellor’s professional designation, such as RCC, RSW or RP. Ask your insurer about eligible designations, annual limits, referral requirements and direct billing. Kaeva cannot guarantee reimbursement or claim approval.

Is ICBC-funded counselling available?

Kaitlyn may provide ICBC-funded counselling for eligible clients. A claim number is required. Coverage, approved sessions and direct billing should be confirmed before the first appointment.

04Privacy, safety and professional services

Is counselling confidential?

Clinical information is handled through approved clinical and administrative systems under the counsellor’s professional and legal obligations. Confidentiality has limits, including circumstances permitted or required by law. The counsellor should explain relevant privacy and confidentiality limits as part of informed consent.

What is the safest way to contact a counsellor?

Use initial messages for scheduling and general fit questions. Do not send detailed clinical information through ordinary email, text or social-media messages unless the counsellor has explained the method and its privacy limitations. Sensitive information is best discussed through an approved secure channel.

Is Kaeva Counselling an emergency or crisis service?

No. Do not use website contact channels for urgent crisis support. If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Do you offer clinical supervision or professional consultation?

Yes. Clinical supervision and professional consultation are presented separately from client counselling. Fit, professional scope, regulatory requirements, goals and the proposed supervision arrangement should be discussed before beginning.
